Select the perfect fonts for your storefront

Fonts are a key element of your Shopify store’s design. How you configure your typography settings define your brand’s style, set the tone for your messaging, and ensure your content is easy to read.

Starting January 2025, Shopify is introducing some changes to its font offerings, including new additions and the deprecation of older fonts. Here’s everything you need to know and how to choose the best fonts for your storefront.

Let's dive into what's changing and how to select new fonts if the changes affect your storefront.

New fonts will be added

Shopify has expanded its library to include 32 new open-source fonts, such as Inter, Space Grotesk, and Playfair Display. These options offer modern, versatile, and high-performance typefaces.

Why are open-source fonts important?

Shopify’s move to an open-source font library has many benefits.

Cost savings and copyright compliance: Open-source fonts are free for commercial use.

Reliability and performance: Open-source fonts are optimized for web use, ensuring they look great across all devices.

Variety and versatility: The expanded library includes options for every design need, from sleek sans-serifs to bold display fonts.

Several fonts will be removed

Bye bye, Beefcakes. A handful of older fonts, such as Josefin Sans, Lobster, and Pacifico, will no longer be supported. If your store currently uses one of these, you’ll need to select a replacement.

How to choose the right fonts for your brand

The fonts you choose should reflect your brand’s identity while maintaining readability and visual appeal. Here are some tips to guide your decision.

Reflect your brand’s personality

Different font styles evoke different emotions. Choose one that aligns with your brand’s tone:

  • Serif fonts: Ideal for traditional, elegant, or upscale brands.
  • Sans-serif fonts: Perfect for modern, minimalist, or tech-focused stores.
  • Script or display fonts: Great for creating unique headlines but should be used sparingly.

Prioritize readability

Your fonts must be easy to read at all sizes. For body text, pick a clean and legible typeface like Inter or Source Sans Pro.

Use font pairings strategically

A harmonious combination of two or three fonts can add depth to your design. For example:

  • Pair Playfair Display (headline) with Inter (body text).
  • Combine Space Grotesk (headline) with Source Sans Pro (body text).

Test out your choices

Use Shopify’s live preview tool to test fonts before finalizing your selection. View your site on different devices to ensure your fonts look great everywhere.

What should you do if your fonts are deprecated?

If your store currently uses a deprecated font, don’t despair. Here’s what to do:

  1. Explore the updated library of available fonts.
  2. Choose a replacement that aligns with your brand and complements your design.
  3. Preview and save the changes to update your storefront seamlessly.
